Our Favorite Autumnal Plants for Your Cool-Weather Landscape

Updated: Aug 1, 2023

The Top Six Plants That Are Perfect for Fall

Even though we’re in the dog days of summer right now, we’ll be entering the fall season before you know it. That means football will be back on the weekends, a shift in weather to cooler temps, and a change in landscape design ideas to accommodate the season. When it comes to landscaping here in Wichita, KS, the season dictates the foliage and direction of the design. That means that right now is the perfect time to start your fall weather plant and landscaping planning so you can get an early jump on things. Meadowlark Landscape & Design just so happens to be one of the few landscaping companies in Wichita, KS, that carries an assortment of fall foliage that is ready to plant so that you can elevate your autumn oasis. Here is a list of our top six fall favorites that customers love for their color and natural ability to endure cooler temperatures.

Autumn Crocus (Colchicum autumnale)

If you are already displaying the spring crocus in your garden, the autumn crocus is a nice transition to a fall weather flower. The autumn crocus blooms in early to mid-fall and does best in direct sunlight to partially-shaded areas. Plant the bulbs in August or September to ensure they have plenty of time to reach full-bloom, which will add a gorgeous splash of lavender, lilac, and purple to your landscaping.

Redpointe Red Maple (Acer rubrum ‘Frank Jr.’ PP)

Nothing says autumn quite like the Redpointe Red Maple tree. This gorgeous tree can be planted in virtually any size yard since it grows in a more narrow fashion than other trees. It will also provide brilliant shades of reds and oranges to enjoy all throughout the fall. The Redpointe Red Maple is one of the most durable trees in the Midwest that holds up well against the cold weather and pests. Expect it to grow around 45 ft. in height and 20 ft. in width at full maturity. Living up to 80 years, this is a tree that your family can enjoy for generations.

Garden Mums

Another fall classic that Wichita residents enjoy are garden mums, which will provide any garden with brilliant flashes of orange, bronze, and gold. They are a highly popular local favorite.

Autumn Blaze Maple (Acer x freemanii ‘Jeffersred’)

We’d be remiss if we didn’t mention the Autumn Blaze maple, a tree akin to the Redpointe Red Maple in that it’s another fall favorite tree that can live for generations. This tree blooms fiery leaves of yellow, gold, and red that provide dazzling curb appeal for years to come. Topping out around 55 ft. in height and 40 ft. in width, the Autumn Blaze maple provides ample shade for any yard.

Ruby Ribbons Switch Grass (Panicum virgatum ‘RR1’ PP)

What we love about Ruby Ribbons Switch Grass is that it can bring a lot of height (up to 48 in.) and subtle splashes of color to your landscaping, however, it takes up only a moderate amount of garden real estate. Switch grass is also incredibly sturdy and durable, able to withstand strong winds and fluctuating temperatures such as the ones we’ll get during the fall and winter seasons. Another bonus is that it’s highly adaptable to adverse temps and conditions. You don’t have to have a green thumb for this variety of switch grass to thrive. Simply water it weekly and it should do fine.

Malus ‘Royal Raindrops’ (Crabapple)

If you want a colorful fall tree similar to the maples we mentioned but on a much smaller scale, a Royal Raindrops tree is the perfect tiny-yet-colorful addition to your landscaping. This tree doesn’t get more than 20 ft. tall and offers plenty of those classic bright fall red colors that you know and love. The Royal Raindrops is also well known for producing fruit that is prized by local birds.
