Winter Sprinkler System Preparation

As winter approaches, homeowners tend to focus on protecting their homes from the cold, but one important aspect often overlooked is the sprinkler system. Without proper winterization, your irrigation system can suffer costly damage from freezing temperatures. Here’s why winterizing your sprinklers is critical and how to ensure it’s done right.

Why Winterize Your Sprinkler System?

When temperatures drop below freezing, any water left in the sprinkler pipes, valves, or pumps can freeze and expand. This expansion can cause pipes to crack or burst, leading to expensive repairs when spring rolls around. Winterizing your system helps you avoid these issues and ensures your sprinklers are ready for action when warmer weather returns.

Steps to Properly Winterize Your Sprinklers

1.      Turn Off the Water Supply

Begin by shutting off the main water supply to your sprinkler system. This step prevents additional water from entering the pipes after the system is drained. Be sure the valve is completely shut to avoid any potential leaks.

2.      Drain the System

After turning off the water, it’s important to drain the remaining water from the system. There are different ways to do this depending on your setup:

-          Manual Drain: Open the valves at the lowest point of the system to allow gravity to expel the water.

-          Automatic Drain: Some systems are equipped with automatic drain valves that release water when the pressure drops.

-          Blowout Method: This involves using an air compressor to blow out the remaining water from the pipes. It's highly effective but should be done with caution to avoid damage.

3.      Insulate Exposed Components

Any above-ground parts, like backflow preventers or exposed pipes, should be insulated to protect against freezing. Use foam insulation or insulated covers designed for outdoor plumbing.

4.      Shut Down the Controller

If your system has an automatic controller, set it to “off” or “rain mode” to prevent it from attempting to run during the winter months.

While some homeowners may feel confident tackling sprinkler winterization on their own, hiring a professional ensures the job is done safely and thoroughly.
